United Methodist Women News
By Karilyn Newnam
One of the purposes of United Methodist Women is to expand the concepts
of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. The
following is taken from the UMW program book, 2000 "Living in a Global
Village" by Jean Saul.
The "Global Village" population is 6 billion people. Scaled down
proportionally to 1,000 people, the following can be said:
Population: 584 Asians
6 Australians & New Zealanders
55 Russians & people from former Soviet Union
52 North Americans
84 Latin Americans
95 East & West Europeans
124 Africans
Faith Traditions: 178 Muslims
329 Christians (Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox)
60 Buddhists
132 Hindus
3 Jewish
86 all other religions
45 Atheists
167 Nonreligious
Lifestyle factors:
200 people receive 75% of the income
Another 200 receive only 2% of the total income.
About 1/3 of the people have access to safe drinking water.
About 1/3 of the people are children, and of these only half are
immunized against preventable diseases like measles and polio.
Each day 250 persons go to bed hungry.
Prayer: O God, you have given us the necessities of life in abundance. We
ask for wisdom and courage and patience to understand our part as faithful
Christians in creating a world of peace and harmony. Amen.

The week of July 15th was a great experience for me and I believe for
those involved with this year's vacation bible school, the Philo Road
Kids Fair.
There was a magnificent turn out this year with 66 children. We had a fun
filled week with games, crafts, stories, music, food and all learning more
about the bible.
There was a great group of support from this congregation and I want them
to know how much they were appreciated for all they did.
I first want to mention the VBS group that has been working on this for
several months, it was this group of people that created all the wonderful
ideas that occurred this year:
Brenda Carter, Dale Johnston, Dayna Prestin,
Mindy Smith and Mandy Wood.
I also want to mention all of our helpers that we had pitch in a variety
of ways:
Jeannie Barnett, Doug Bauling, Mary Bauling, Glen Black, June Black, Bob
deJong, Linda Entwistle, Olive Gregory, Eric Hays, Amanda Henderson,

Our Church Family by Karen Knight
Bob deJong
Grace seems to have a good share of P.K.’s (preacher’s kids). We have
Mike and Gordy among others, and for the past three years, we have had Bob
deJong.
Bob, whose father was a minister in the Reformed Church in America, was
born in Chicago but spent most of his growing-up years in Grand Rapids,
Michigan. The family then moved back to the Chicago suburbs. Besides
parents, the family also included two brothers and a sister. Bob earned a
degree in sociology from Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights. Because
of his Dutch background, he also chose to spend six months in the
Netherlands studying the Dutch language and European history.
Ten years ago following surgery and a particularly low point in his life,
Bob decided to make a new start in a new location. He moved to Urbana where
his brother, a retired Urbana policeman, lived. Bob had another neck surgery
in 1999. He was advised to walk as a part of his rehabilitation and on his
daily walks he walked by Grace Church. Also about that time his sister gave
him a book, What’s Amazing about Grace?, which he feels changed his
life. He felt the need to look for alternatives to his lifestyle.
Bob decided to check Grace out. He says that he felt love and acceptance
at Grace.
Since coming to Grace, Bob has been involved in many activities. He loves
music and is part of the Chancel Choir and Praise Team and helped with
Vacation Bible School music this year. Bob coordinates the Spiritual
Formation team, is a leader of the Wednesday Wellspring service, attends the
Men’s Breakfast Group, and is a member of the Seekers Sunday School class
where, according to some fellow classmates, his Biblical knowledge has been
enriching. Doing pastoral visits is also one of his volunteer activities and
he feels he is the one blessed by these visits. Bob likes to read and has
recently been reading about the lives of the saints. He feels this has
helped him to grow spiritually.
Bob is a very warm and caring person. His non-judgmental and accepting
attitude is refreshing and reminds us of what being
Christ-like is about. We are blessed because Bob took those walks by
Grace. |

Friends Moving Away
Fellowship Hour in Their Honor
Sunday, August 4th will be the last Sunday Olive Gregory and
Linda Berry and her family will be with us. They are moving to Michigan on
August 11th. They have all been a blessing to our church family
for many years. Olive and Len came to America from London England to be near
their only child Linda and her family. Len lost his battle with cancer last
January and it is going to be trying for Olive as she goes to a new place
where no one knew him, but knowing Olive and Linda as the wonderful people
that they are, the people in Michigan are in for a blessing as we were when
they came to join our church family. They all will be missed indeed, not
only their sweet smiles and lovely English accent but their warm and sincere
greetings at worship services will always be remembered.
I understand that they may be back for visits after getting settled in
Michigan, so prayerfully they will be able to join us on occasion.
Olive has given us her new address and would like to hear from our church
family hers and Linda’ address will be; Olive Gregory Linda Burgett
4327 Stoneridge Dr.
Traverse City, Michigan 49684
Phone number: 231-929-7540
Olive will be living with Linda and her new husband, Richard Burgett. If
you don’t get to see Olive and Linda on August 4th, do send a
card to her new address.
Our prayers and best wishes go with them as they travel and make a new
home in Michigan. May God bless you both, dear Olive and Linda and family we
love you and we will miss you.

CAMPUS MINISTRIES
The campus ministries of our conference need your help. They hope to get
contact information (name, phone number, etc.) for college students who are
from your congregation. They need this information so that they can contact
those new ( and existing) college students to invite them to participate in
worship, Bible study and other activities. This is extremely important to
students as they go to college.
You can provide the information for the college students from your
congregation in one of the following ways:
1. Email the information (name, phone number, address, and the school
they will/are going to attend) for each college student to umwesley@siu.edu.
2. Call 618-457-8165 and provide the same information for each college
student.
3. You can also visit the web page:
http://www.gbgm-umc.org/igrac-higher-ed and use that information
to contact the particular campus ministry at the University that the student
will attend.
4. Use regular mail to send the information about each student to the
conference office at the following address:
Susan Meister, IGRAC Conference Ministry Team
2144 South MacArthur Blvd. Suite 2B, Springfield, Il. 62704.
We thank you for your help in this important ministry to the young adults
of our conference.

DATES CHANGES FOR ANNUAL
CONFERENCE 2003 During the recent gathering of the Covenant
Keepers prior to Annual Conference, several pastors noted that the scheduled
dates for the 2003 Session of Annual Conference would conflict with
Pentecost which will be on Sunday, June 8th, 2003. Pastors then
began asking if dates of the 2003 Annual Conference could be changed.
The dates of an Annual Conference are determined by the presiding Bishop.
So the Rev R David Reynolds, Chairperson of the Committee on Annual
Conference
Session for the IGRAC took this request to Bishop Christopher. Bishop
Christopher saw the problem and was willing to make the needed change. The
Committee had to confirm with the Peoria Civic Center that their facility
would be available at a different week.
As a result, Bishop Christopher with the support of your Committee on
A.C.S. is pleased to announce that the
2003 Session of the Illinois Great Rivers Annual Conference will now
begin on Wednesday evening, May 28th, and conclude on Saturday,
May 31st,2003.
This is one week earlier than our usual dates.
Please make this change on your calendars, and make plans accordingly for
our 2003 Annual Conference.

| A Prayer for August
Gary Ricketts
It is time for school to start. Where did the summer go? God’s handiwork
will soon be revealed to us again, as the colors of summer are transformed
into the colors of fall. Fall is my favorite time of year. The warm days and
cool nights and the beauty of the trees and leaves are very comforting.
There is no doubt that God is the Master Artist, creating beauty for us to
behold.
Prayer has a powerful impact on both the one being prayed for and the one
praying. We must never forget that God still answers prayers. They are
answered in his way and in his timing. Please lift up in prayer the joys and
concerns mentioned in our worship services, passed along through the prayer
chains and those made known in a variety of other ways.
Lord, the changing seasons help to reveal the beauty of your creation.
The beauty is there for us if we but take the time to open our eyes and
truly see. We need your guidance each day Lord, so that we may not stray
from your path for us. We lift up the joys and concerns of our church family
and our own personal prayers. Inspire us Lord to be a better servant
tomorrow than we were today. Help us to love others with the depth of your
love, to be as compassionate as you are compassionate, to reach out to
others as you do to us, and to realize that our true strength comes from
you.
Guide and direct us Lord so that we might better serve you. Through Jesus
Christ we pray. Amen.

X.Y.Z.’S NEWS
Do you know what " XYZ" stands for?
Well it stands for "Xtra Years of Zest" and that is just what our
group has. We really enjoy getting out and going places, being together, and
just enjoying each other’s company. Oh you may hear a groan or a puffing
sound once in a while, but there is always a helping hand to help steady or
just a word of "I know what you mean" to encourage us to hang in there. And
that is just what we do, our "Zest is a witness as to our Lord’s love that
He has let us live a good life and He isn’t through with us yet.
On August 8th we are going to the Pickle Tree in Mahomet for
lunch, have you been there? If so you know of their really good sandwiches
and salads, especially the chicken salad sandwich on homemade bread. They
also have a shopping area that has some unique stuff, really interesting.
After lunch (and shopping) we will visit the museum at the Lake of the
Woods, and maybe a little sight seeing on the return trip, a surprise!!
Be at the church at 10:30 am, on August 8th, we will be
back around 3 pm.
We do need to know how many to make reservation for at the Pickle Tree so
please call the James’ at 328-1735 or the Gladsons at 367-6838.
To you that may need a ride to the church, please call the
office,328-1414 and arrangements will be made to pick you up, so you may
have fun with us.
Come join us, we will share our Zest with you.

his work in Chili. Our evening service will be at 7:30 pm. Join us!

SWEET CORN PROJECT 2002
The sweet corn this year was a short crop for we were not able to plant
the seed due to the wet planting season and then the drought of the growing
season.
At this writing the amount of profit is not available but our Lord was
good and we did cover expenses has been reported, thanks be to God.
The committee wants to thank all the pickers who came out early to pick
the corn and to the sellers who braved the humidity and heat of the day to
be here for our customers. And we want to thank you, our customers for
buying our corn. May God bless all of you.
Next year it has been suggested that we give the good earth a rest to
replenish itself with the needed nutrients to grow again when we replant
another sweet corn crop A rest is important, even our Heavenly Father took a
rest when he needed it.
The church wants to especially thank Bob deJong for his dedication and
hard work getting the pickers and sellers lined up and organized. Also for
him working every day selling the corn when he couldn’t get someone for the
shifts needed.
Thanks Bob and God bless you.

In any way
with our corn project!

Thank you’s received:
Kudos to Marilyn Wright and her committee for the great week of Vacation
Bible School aka
PHILO ROAD KIDS FAIR
Mary Bauling
GARAGE RENOVATION
Many thanks to those who helped replace the garage roof and siding. The
new garage door gives more height and keeps the water out. Litigation
settlements on the roofing and siding more than covered all of the
improvements.
Doug Bauling, Trustee
THANK YOU
Thanks, Friends, for your prayers, visits, expressions of concern and
caring thoughts that I have received the past two weeks. You have brightened
my day!! I will see you soon.
Wanda Adams
THANK YOU DEAR FRIENDS
WOW!!! What a joyous birthday!!
Thanks for all the good wishes, cards, greetings, and gifts. A special
thanks to those of you who came to help me celebrate on such a hot day.
Gordy, thanks for the beautiful music. I really appreciated it.
It was an awesome afternoon for me and I thank all of
you for helping me to make it so. You’re the greatest and I love you!!

DEAR CHRISTIAN FRIENDS, We are praising God for His
blessings to Bradley.
He had his four month checkup today, and the doctor was thrilled with the
results on the effectiveness of the treatments which Bradley has received.
We are grateful to you for keeping us in your prayers as he is having
some painful complications which often accompany the kind of treatments
which were chosen to kill the cancer. The doctor believes the complications
will lessen as the pellets begin to lose their radioactivity over the next
few months.
Please continue to keep us in your prayers.
Anne Harris Watkins
FROM LOAVES & FISHES
We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who brought dishes and to
all who attended the "All American Meal." Special thanks to
the group members for all their hard work from set up to clean up.
God Bless all of you.

Hopefully you got to enjoy our sweet corn this year.
Here are some "corny" recipes
that you may enjoy.
I surely pray that you do.
Zippy Corn on The Cob
6 medium ears sweet corn
½ cup butter or margarine (melted)
2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 Tablespoon minced fresh parsley
2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
½ teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
++++++++++++++++++++++++
Place ears of corn on a double thickness of heavy-duty
foil. In a small bowl, combine the remaining ingredients; brush over corn.
Fold foil around corn and seal tightly. Grill, ( Or use the oven). Covered,
over medium heat for 25-30 (350-375 degrees for oven)minutes or until corn
is tender, turning once.
Bacon-Wrapped Corn on the Cob
8 large ears sweet corn, husks removed
8 bacon strips
2 Tablespoons chili powder
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Wrap each ear of corn with a bacon strip; place each on a
piece of heavy-duty foil. Sprinkle with chili powder. Wrap securely,
twisting ends to make handles for turning. Grill (or oven 350-375 degrees)
uncovered over medium-hot heat for 20 minutes or until corn is tender and
bacon is cooked, turning once.
Corn Salad
3 cans Whole Kernel Corn (11 oz) drained
3 Plum tomato, seeded and chopped
½ cup thinly sliced green onions
½ cup chopped sweet red pepper
½ cup mayonnaise
½ teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
In a bowl, combine all ingredients. Cover and refrigerate
for at least 1 hour. Yield:6-8 servings.
This is really good and so-o-o-o easy.
Slow Cooked Corn Chowder
Using your Crock Pot
2 ½ cups milk
1 can (14 3/4 Oz) cream style corn
1 can (10 3/4 Oz) cream of Mushroom Soup
1 3/4 cups frozen corn or canned Whole Kernel corn
1 cup frozen shredded hash brown potatoes
1 cup cubed fully cooked ham ( I used a small canned ham
and used the whole can)
1 large onion, chopped
2 Tablespoons butter or margarine
2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes
Salt and pepper to taste
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In a slow cooker, combine all ingredients. Cover and cook
on low for 6 hours. Yield: 8 servings.
This recipe will double very easy, just cook on high for
an hour and then 6 hours on low.
You also can assemble this soup the night before and then
just put it in the crock pot in the morning before you go to work
Corn Pudding Squares
2 cans (15 1/4 oz each) whole kernel corn, undrained
2 cans (14 3/4 oz each) cream style corn
2 cups (16 ounces) sour cream
1 cup butter or margarine, melted
2 packages (6 ½ oz each) corn muffin mix
3 eggs, beaten
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients; beat just
until combined. Pour into two greased 9x13 x2 in baking dishes. Bake at 350
degrees for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center
comes out clean. Cool for 15 minutes on wire racks before cutting. Serve
warm. Yield: 24 servings
