| Library News - Book Review
by: Karilyn Newnam "Fanny Crosby - the Hymn Writer"
Frances Jane "Fanny" Crosby was born on March 24, 1820. Incompetent
medical treatment when she was a baby rendered her sightless for life. At
age 14, she began attending the newly founded New York Institution for the
Blind where she was to stay, first as a student, then a teacher for the
next two decades. She became a prolific writer of hymns. Some of the hymns
she wrote the words for are:
Blessed Assurance, Safe in the Arms of Jesus, Pass Me Not, O Gently
Saviour,
Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross, All the Way My Saviour Leads Me, Sweet
Hour of Prayer, Rescue the Perishing
During the latter nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Fanny
Crosby reigned as the hymn queen. She was a talented musician and wanted
to write words that would lead people to Christ.
This paperback book (208 pgs) is in our library. Stop by, browse and
learn more about the lady who shared her faith through her poems, words
and song.

Our Church
Family
by Karen Knight
Meet Karilyn Newnam
In the late 60’s, Karilyn Newnam left her home in Fairbury and followed
her sister, Shirley, to Urbana. As Karilyn remembers, Wanda Adams invited
them to attend Grace.
"Involved" is a good word to describe Karilyn’s years here. She has served
on various committees and has held every office except secretary in the
United Methodist Women.
Currently, she is the newsletter team’s correspondent for the UMW.
Music has been a big part of Karilyn’s contribution to Grace. She has
helped with the Cherub Choir and Sunday School music, has been a member of
the bell choir, and is part of the Chancel Choir and the Praise Team.
Karilyn was born and raised in Fairbury where her mother still lives.
Her family included three sisters and a brother. In high school, she was
active in band and chorus.
For the past sixteen years, Karilyn has worked in accounting in the
University of Illinois Housing Department. She enjoys her works and
appreciates a great group of co-workers. Pastimes include music and
reading, especially historical biographies. Karilyn also enjoys traveling
and has been to Europe and most of the states. Since a sister now lives in
Montana, she has enjoyed trips west.
In Karilyn’s words, "Grace is a community of people who try to share
God’s love with others through church missions, the corn project,
fellowship and prayers." Because of her kind and gentle manner and her
willingness to be involved, we are blessed to have Karilyn as a part of
our community.

Are You Listening, Lord?
Inspired by God
Penned by Gary Ricketts
Have you ever sat and wondered,
If God heard your prayers today?
Or does it seem like the wind
Is simply blowing your words away?
Have you prayed in earnest
With deep concern and conviction?
Only to be left in troubled wonder,
Why your prayers were not answered?
Yes, Lord I really want to know
If you hear my feeble cry.
I need to know that my words
Are not being lost in the wind.
Suddenly, another thought comes to mind.
Could it be that God is answering,
But because my life is so hectic
That I haven’t taken time to listen?
Maybe, Lord, I judged you unfairly,
And didn’t realize that I might be the problem.
I guess instant answers is what I want,
Rather than waiting on you.
Forgive me, Lord for being selfish,
And for being impatient this day.
You are the Potter, Lord and I am the clay.
Just mold and shape me in your divine way.
Give me lots of patience, Lord,
To wait until you answer.
Give me keen ears, Lord,
To hear that still small voice.

A Prayer for September
Submitted by Gary Ricketts
Church activities are shifting into high gear along with school and
school-related activities. This is not to say that the church hasn’t been
busy during the summer; for it has. However, September seems to be the
beginning of the church year. This is when we focus in again on the life
of the church, our vision and goals for the church, and pray anew for God
to give us guidance and direction, both individually and collectively.
Prayer has a powerful impact on the one being prayed for and the one
praying. We must never forget that God still answers prayers. They are
answered in his way and in his timing. Please lift up in prayer the joys
and concerns mentioned in our worship services, passed along through the
prayer chains and those made known in a variety of other ways.
Lord, help us to not get so caught up in the business of life that we
forget about you; the source of our strength and direction. We need to
become more patient, Lord, and listen for an answer to our prayers. We
need your guiding hand each day Lord, for we must strive to seek your
will, and then do your will. When we feel weak, lift us up. When we feel
unloved, wrap your loving arms around us. When we are sick, bless us with
your healing touch.
We lift up the joys and concerns of our church family and our own
personal prayers. Guide and direct us Lord, so that we can better serve
you. Through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen
